Jackets being seasonal wear in most parts of the world, there aren’t too many apparel manufacturing setups dedicated to jackets in Bangladesh. But Luman Group – manufacturing jackets since 1991, is one of the leading jacket manufacturers in the country, which besides jackets, also takes up programmes for cargos, beach shorts and denim offerings and caters to American giants like Walmart and JCPenney alongside Turkish buyers like Defacto, Loft and Collins. What’s more, in an effort to offer its clients a complete package in the long run, the company is working towards bringing everything in-house, from fabric production to finishing, gradually.
The business impetus has prompted Luman Group to now set up a new manufacturing unit in Gazipur again dedicated to jacket manufacturing but targeted at bigger buyers as the present factory is constrained by lack of space. However, the management of Luman Group has decided to run it in tandem temporarily while at the same time shift a few lines to the new setup and keep adding to it steadily once the manpower required for the new unit is properly trained, and for which the company plans to depute its mid-management executives to help carry out necessary trainings and also optimize the manufacturing processes.
“We currently produce around 70-80,000 pieces per month, and plan to take it up to 3,50,000 not only by enhancing the number of machines but also by increasing the efficiency of the sewing lines, which is expected from the newly setup industrial engineering department,” informs Towhidur Rahman, Director, Luman Group. He further added that the new facility will have automatic cutting and designing (CAD/CAM) upgrade, currently done manually in the existing setup. The company also recently implemented auto foot lifter and auto-trimming devices on its machines that has improved man-machine ratio from 1.50 to 1.75 The Group also plans to introduce pattern stitching machines in its factory for quilting in down jackets, aimed at reducing production time of every jacket by 2-3 minutes.
